Every figure on this site comes from a source I can name. This page explains where the numbers come from, how often they’re refreshed, and what to do if you think one of them is wrong.
Housing and rent
Rental figures are based on CMHC‘s Rental Market Reports for Newfoundland and Labrador, cross-checked against current listings on Kijiji, Facebook Marketplace and realtor.ca. CMHC data is authoritative but lags the market, so where current listings differ noticeably from the last CMHC report, I say so and give both.
Groceries and consumer prices
Baseline figures come from Statistics Canada’s Consumer Price Index for Newfoundland and Labrador. Prices are given as ranges because they vary between St. John’s and rural communities, sometimes significantly.
Utilities
Electricity costs use published Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro and Newfoundland Power rates. Internet and mobile figures come from current published plans from providers operating in the province.
Immigration
Program requirements, draw results and eligibility criteria come from the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador’s Office of Immigration and Multiculturalism and from Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada. Nothing on this site is immigration advice — for that, consult a licensed representative.
How often this is updated
Pages carry a “last updated” date. When a figure changes materially, the page is revised and the date changes with it.
What I don’t do
I don’t republish scraped aggregator data as if it were original research. I don’t present estimates as measured figures. Where something is my estimate, it’s labelled as one.
Corrections
If a number here doesn’t match what you actually pay, tell me. Corrections from residents are the most useful feedback this project gets. The contact form is on the About page.
